because you play chess on a mobile phones
I would imagine if you ask people who make a living from it most would say yes. If you poll normal people on the street, very few would consider chess a sport.
Same as e-sports. Tht's only a thing to people involved in doing it. To 99% of the world it's just 'people playing computer games' and chess is playing a board game.
People like to be able to say what they are doing is 'sport' though because they think it sounds better and they are pretentious.
I have no idea why the IOC consider it a sport though.
