Chess isn't fair - but I can fix it!

Your measures are insufficient.

White shall only be allowed to touch the pieces with his little toe, and we shall use a special clock with a width of 1 km. The button for black is right next to him, but white shall have to run all the way to the end. Additionally, white shall not be permitted to capture a piece or check the opponent before the opponent has done so. Last but not least, White shall only be able to promote his pawns into bishops.

This might just give Black a shot at victory, however unlikely the odds may seem.

yeaaa its pretty fair as is. given with best possible play. it should be impossible for black to win even one game..

blacks objective is to not only make white give up a tempo.. but give up even  another one so as to have the advantage.

this is what makes chess interesting... and fun to play.. that in theory any side can win...just cause you lose as black doesnt mean you should up and change the game thats been around for over a thousand years.

every peice moves like it should, but attacks in the opposite diection.  rooks with bishops, queens with knights.

bishops move diagonally, but must attack forward or sideways (like a rook)

rooks move sideways and forward, but must attack diagonally (like bishops)

knights move like knights, but must attack like queens

queens move like queens, but must attack like knights

pawns are special.  they can move forward/backward/sideways 1 square. they attack 1 square diagonally.

like real chess, special rules apply.  ex. en passant or pawns moving 2 spaces 1st move (even sideways!)

and there is one special rule, you can attack your own peices if you want (to get out of checkmate)

An intriguing solution. Remind me: what was the problem?

there was no problem.  i was just making chess more interesting

Black already gets placement of the clock, Black gets choice of the opening. Does it matter who gets to develop first if the other side can basically choose the fate of the white pieces? This is why chess is balanced.

Personally, I prefer playing as black unless I am playing a blitz game where I prefer white

Ryuzaki_Lawliet

I don't think that is true at all. my friend and i are pretty even when playing chess. He is never black and we have played a lot of games with each other and we are tied in wins, losses, and draws. I also think it solely depends one the players. a beginner(white) vs. a grand master(black) who do you think would win. if you say the stats of the world championship matches then it's different. They do varients that give black a huge advantage and others white. there is no such thing as fairness, equality, justice to humans.

lol.....one thing why black loss is it forgets its role ,..... my friend the role of black is to defend, and white to attack, if white fails to attack because of the good position of black

then the come back  of the black is even brutal,... yes the white moves  first but initiating or leading the game has a pressure on white parts, i did not study statistics but this is base from my experience,..

I'm in complete favour of the "black punch 1st then play rule": Think about it!

You'll have a fighting chance against chess computers! Give 1 deft kick to his groin... errr, i mean, power supply, and the game is yours! He can't retaliate when HE's black!

AND

Kasparov beats Anand.... but loses to Hulk Hogan!!!

Question... how do we implement this online?

Besides being left handed already, you have another problem. It is already required for the clock to be on WT's left in otb tournaments, unless black requests otherwise at least. And required to move with the same hand that punches the clock. Yet, BL still wins less than WT in USCF and FIDE . . . Uh oh Undecided Now what to do ?

Why not just spin the board every 5 moves and don't reveal until after the game which color the players are assigned for scoring purposes ?!

Hehe, guess what folks? I'm left handed!!! No disadvantage for me there! Ha!

Beast719, you could have chosen a more intuitive, humorous group to present your ideas to, I see most people are trying to have a debate, but I guess spending too much time playing chess with it's strict rules and incredible need for memorising upenings had made some of our site colleagues less respondent to humour.

How about if White had to play standing? Or bottom-half-naked? Or what if Black was allowed (or obliged) to have stinky feet on play days and keep his or her feet underneath white's chair?

Jaguarphd

In games like Go, black goes first and white gets about 6 in a half points because that is what they valued as the first move if I remember correctly. Chess doesn't go by points in terms of winning so I do not see how we can work something like that into chess.

black should be allowed to pick a random pawn that will be automaticly changed into a second queen or king on move 10

Good idea, but here's a variation.  Black picks a random pawn and on move 40 it automatically becomes a Chuck Norris piece.  This piece can move to any square at any time and can not be captured.  And, when black wins then the Chuck Norris piece roundhouse kicks whites King in the face.

How about tinkering with the Glicko formula to increase black's market share (they did it with Coca-Cola). e.g. attenuate the "attenuating factor".

Troy-Smith-19

maybe the greatest players like going first so theydo and win

pushwood

That explains how Walter Browne beat me in a simul- it makes me wonder, how would I have fared with white?

LordJones3rd

How about putting whites clock hanging on a string just out of reach above them, so black can have the entertainment of tickling white under the armpits as he attemps to press the clock.

Chess ain't fair but somebody got to do it...

Mr. handicapper general (TC),you sir, you fail.  thats why people take turns white what color they play as.  :)

why not allow both players to go at the same time. lol Great forum.

actually I liked this idea, is would be really like wargamming.

Imagine this, Napolean said "Lord Wellington you shoot first", Wellington muttered to himself "Idiots"...."Ok Napolean we will, *fire !*"

wargamming never see who goes first...
