I don't know about Chess, but in the Bassmaster classic here in the USA a couple years back, a truck driver actually won the Classic. To get serious, though, a chess player from humble origins is Joseph Blackburne--he learned Chess at the age of, I think, 16(!). He was one of the leading players of his day. By the way, Blackburne was the last Englishman before Jonathan Penrose ( he defeated Tal) to win a game against the reigning world champion. That's what I call sucess!

Just curious guys. Could you post some stories of players who found success when they were older? It doesn't have to be a world champion type. Just a ramdom example: A truck driver who became a state champ or something like that. Any thing you find interesting. Thanks!
