 “Stalemate” is a position where the player whose turn it is to move is not in check but has no legal moves either with his King or with any of his other men. When a stalemate occurs, the game is considered drawn. Stalemate can arise if a player makes a thoughtless move when attempting to mate his opponent’s lone King. Carelessness in winning positions is the main cause of stalemate.

 

 However, stalemate is not always the result of a gross blunder. Sometimes it is planned as a method of saving an otherwise lost position.
