I think it's a combination of the two.

It is good luck that any of us were born into circumstances that permitted us to learn the game of chess, have access to the internet, and be able to correspond about this here. Even take away the internet part, how many people in the history of the earth have never been exposed to the game of chess or would ever have the opportunity to learn and play it? Very very few, I'm sure. So there's certainly some "luck", "fortune", whatever you want to call, involved.
I can see his point. Scrabble, dominoes, cards or dice games are more luck based when compared to chess.
On the other hand, one might term such games as "unpredictable", as opposed to "predictable" games such as chess, or tic-tac-toe (I add that in to take chess off its high horse!) Whether luck exists or not is as much a matter of perception as reality... and there is something to be said for the use of one's own intelligence and skill in dealing with the unpredictable results of a roll of the dice, or a turn of the card.
There is no luck in the game ofchess-period. Whoever plays more skillfully will win.
In poker, a beginner might have a good run of cards and win the world championship. A beginning chess player is never going to get lucky and be the world champion.
Scrabble takes a lot of skill but players are dependent on the luck of what letters they draw. Poker is the same way with cards.
In fact, it's hard to think of many other games that are so totally dependent upon skill.
Another forum had a post in which someone said "I play chess because its all skill, no luck".
Do you agree? I dont. Every game is different. I think there is some luck in everything. I dont think anyone has or ever will be talented enough to know every implication of every move.
