This lady must be stopped from being near all chess-themed TV. Her advice would see 6 Kings on the board.
Chess on TV, are the producers idiots?
Well, i say tomato you say tomato. One could find things funny that were not ment to be funny. In this case i don`t think it was meant as a joke. But, what the hell, A laugh a day keeps the Doctor Away..
I remember I watched a movie like 7 years ago, I do not remember the name.
But the fact is that 2 boys (the good guy and the bad guy) super gifted in chess were playing a very important match. They both had just a king and a pawn. The bad boy promotes his pawn and in a very proud way says "Queen". But then immediately the good boy also promotes his pawn, and at the same time makes check, and when the bad boy moves the king, then the good boy takes his opponent's queen.
The funny thing, is that even a 300 ELO player would see that coming, and the bad guy (who is apparenly a chess genious) did not see it coming and made such a shocked face when he saw it...hahahaha it was really hilarious.
There were anyway a lot of ilogical things in that movie.
Wasn't that the one about Waitzkin?
Magnus was interviewed on tele in the UK during the recent Candidates tourney in London. During the interview, the presenter starts a game with Carlsen - presenter plays 1 d4, Carlsen replies 1 ... Nf6.
Later the presenter refers to the Queen's Pawn opening he played as his "Sicilian Defence".

See if you can watch the whole clip without hiding behind the sofa in embarrassment
Football (soccer) commentators make me angry.
When the game is dull they'll often say "this is like a chess match..." - whereas they should say something like "this is like a chess match where both players need half a point and they've rolled out the bleedin' Caro-Kann...". I've made this point in countless letters to football authorities and have yet to receive a single reply. It's outrageous.
You never hear chess commentators refer to a dull chess game as being like "a really crap football match"
Chess is usually seen as "something that smart people do" so it's an easy way of getting across that you have some smart people in the scene... The other problem is gettting people to know what the heck is going on. I'm guessing that "checkmate" and terms like "mate in whatever" are the only chess terms most people know and that unless you plan on adding tons of context to the scene ruining the point of it entirely you're going to have to use the word checkmate so people know that someone just won. The point of scenes like this is to get certain points across and not to be factual.
This would fail horribly with popular spectator sports since practicality the entire audience would see the issues and the immersion would be broken... I think some writers use it as an inside joke...
Everyone who is good at anything hates the way it is depicted in most movies. For 40 years, I've wondered why they didn't get some Boy Scout in to teach Burt Reynolds and the gang a brief introduction to how to paddle a canoe prior to making Deliverance.
I thought I was the only one wondering about this stuff.

Yes, I already posted the game, and it wasn't a 300 ELO mistake. What is illogical to me though is that the game it was based on was actually drawn, and in that game the Josh never brought his queen out early, and they both somehow hung queens in their game.
I cant think of a Chess movie that was viewed by more of the general public then searching for B.F. If it would have been all pure Chess logic we wouldnt be talking about it because we wouldnt have seen it.

I agree.
In Stargate Atlantis, season 2 episdoe 9, the episode starts off with two people playing chess, staring at a position. In the episode commentary, the directors mention that these two people list chess on their resume, and didn't like the position the director came up with, so they made their own, and it's a tough move. They actually did it right in this episode.
In an episode of Stargate SG-1, O'Neill is playing chess with himself, and seems to prefer 1.c4 c6 2. f3 Qb6 3. Kf2 (illegal, played as the doorbell rings) while passing time. I may have the moves wrong, but I know he moves into check. Oh well.
That's one line of the Retarded English King opening! Retard King players of any stripe care not for illegal moves or moving into check. 1.c4,any 2.f3, any 3.Kf2 is at least better than the blithering moron 1.e4,any 2.Ke2??
Anyone who loses to these should quit chess forever.

They both hung their queens? That's not true. The queens were exchanged early, and neither were "hung."

I think he meant the movie.
Maybe but I don't think so. It appears he's referring to the actual game.
For one, he mentions that. ("The actual game was drawn and in that game...")
Furthermore, he mentions that Josh never brought his queen out early. In the movie Josh DID bring his queen out early, much to the dismay of Bruce Pandolfini.

Let me clarify - In the actual game Josh never brought his queen out early, and the game was drawn.
In the movie they both hung queens.
I didn't word it that well.
Linuxblue1, you have way too much time on your hands mate,
where did you find that little video gem? It was so bad I was transfixed in front of the computer & it took 5 valium & a bottle Scotch to get over it. No wonder they can't get it right on TV. (Makes note, 1st King to the other end of the board wins!! Look out my next opponent!!)
It could be worse.
THe Backyard Professor could become the official Holywood chess advisor.
