Hi Everyone! I have a question,  Is it consider cheating when one plays Opening moves from the WIKIPEDIA chess opening book moves? Like I sometime check the moves from there...Only a few opening moves are there...I read all the related article and discussion that which move is better or which move will bring what.. and learn too. It's all on wikipedia #TheOpeningMove.. every opening move has a name and code.. so one learns from that and study the openings..Is it a bad thing? #Cheating?

Correspondence chess ("online" in Erikspeak) it is allowed, even encouraged.

Live chess absolutely forbids the use of any artificial aids during play.  No books, no computer resources, no help, no analysis boards: nothing but your mind.  Even setting up a board next to your computer to mirror the game moves is considered cheating.

@baddogno. Thanks for answering. Good to know :)

Well, they're trying to replicate OTB conditions.  I'm sure lots of folks in long time controls especially do it since OTB you play with real pieces, not a digital display.  I personally don't see a problem with it as long as you don't shuffle pieces around.  Still the fact that you can now view the game from a different perspective is considered an artificial aid and is therefore prohibited.

It's considered cheating to mirror a live game on a chess board? I didn't know that. Oops. I guess it's like having an analysis board, but it certainly didn't feel like cheating. Learn something new everyday.

I think as long as you don't move the pieces around and just use it as a 3D board, it's okay. It's fair play in my book.

And then there's always the possibility that I'm just flat out wrong.  Been known to happen now and again...Laughing

my openion is that a player can just win a game with cheating etc but if someone want to learn chess then winning a game is not the whole achievment. The main focus should be that what you learn in every new game. i have learnt from every game but learnt much more from games that i lost.
