Don't know how good Helmut was...but I doubt that he had much of a chance against Bogie.

Yeah probably not. Kubrick and Bogart are the only Hollywood types that I know were decent, both on a good day north of 2000. Dylan played no idea if he was any good (just seen a lot of photos of him playing so wonder if he was)..

I wonder why apparently there are no games between Kubrick and Nabokov during the filming of Lolita.

I keep hearing how good Kubrick was...but I have at least seen an actual game of Bogie's (and he looked pretty sharp).

Yeah Im just guessing based on the stories of him being a chess hustler, I figure those guys are mostly 1800-2000 (though they get a 100 point bump for the banter).

And of course I remember a thread on here about how he was a GM...lol

Maybe they confused Kubrick with HAL 9000?

Arthur C. Clark was on CBS today. They ran on YouTube a rerun of the Apollo 11 launch on the 50th anniversary. Arthur C. Clark was interviewed a few minutes before launch. He predicted that the cost of the moon landing would be repaid with interest because of manufacturing that would take place in space over the next few decades.

Obviously we didn't benefit from manufacturing in space, but we have benefited immensely from the R&D that came from NASA.  This includes LED technology, improved tire technology, memory foam, solar energy technology advancement, freeze drying, video technology and much more.

Thank you for mentioning that moment in history and the youtube video.  I watched 30 minutes with Cronkite, Arthur Clarke and Robert Heinlein, and thought it was well worth watching.  It was a day which they, and the world, were contemplating that they had just witnessed the greatest moment in human history, and were struggling to imagine any moment in the future that would ever be that great.  (And it was true!).

I heard nothing about space manufacturing, but I did hear the prediction that the first human born away from earth would happen before the end of the century (Clark), and that there would surely be hospitals in space before the end of the century for those who would benefit from low gravity (Heinlein).

Of course they were way wrong.  They were filled with optimism.  They felt the positivity of the time.  They felt that Apollo 11 wasn't a brief  historic moment, but a beginning where space travel would now be a normal part of human life!  Just as other breakthroughs in science became the norm, like Radio, Cars, TVs etc.  It is an understandable point of view and fascinating to watch 50 years later.

Fischer with his chess 'mentor' Jack Collins. I'd kill for a mentor like Collins.

"In his book My Seven Chess Prodigies, Jack Collins wrote that Bobby was a constant presence at his home at 91 Lenox Road in Brooklyn from the summer of 1956 to the summer of 1958. During this time, Fischer went from being rated 2200 to one of the best players in the world. While not a teacher in a formal sense, Collins was a valuable mentor who studied and played chess constantly with Bobby. The Hawthorne Chess Club, which was based in Collins’ home, attracted not only Fischer, but also other strong junior players including William Lombardy and Raymond Weinstein, who would soon be ranked among the best in the United States."- World Chess Hall of Fame

"Bobby has probably read—more than ‘read’, rather, chewed and digested—more chess books and magazines than anybody else. This was no task; it was a pleasure, and it has made him the most knowledgeable player in history. Five to ten hours a day of reading and studying have been the rule, not the exception. And language has been no barrier."- Jack Collins

There's a big difference between 5 and 10 hours a day.

Bobby Fischer only spent 10 hours a day on chess? No wonder he was only world champ for 3 years!

now, I think that looks better, thank you. the retouch was done well and sharpened up nicely to bring out more details in the older players hair and the profile of the pieces. I would have added in about 10%  noise.

Hmm 10% more noise? Seems a bit too much to me. Do you not know Fischer was hyper-sensitive to sound?

Jokes aside, I didn't do the edit, but I agree it's a nice retouch.

According to himself, he was forever!

Surely there's something in this thread to satisfy your needs? Have a browse, and if there's nothing you like I'll throw a few more about.

And Spassky was the eternal challenger!

He's still waiting for another rematch. Spassky's prepared a theoretical novelty against the Ruy Lopez that he's itching to uncork, but that damned Fischer isn't being very co-operative in organizing the match...

perhaps #5. The Atica photo would loose its power if recoloured. Using existing photos ye could compose a fantasy match picture and imagine what your chosen fantasy game would look like if there was a Tardis on stand by. now that would get the creative juices flowing.

Fischer vs Karpov is an obvious one.

Pffft color... Sorry photography is a hobby of mine (why I suck at chess) so here is a shameless non chess plug.

Sorry for hijacking, just love photography, and I never take color photos! Though I did love that Korchnoi photos, wish I could take one that good... oh well back to chess
