I am going to buy a set, can anyone tell me what their opinion on weighted, materiel and brand of chess pieces are? If possible maybe a link to that set. I need a board and pieces.

Thanks

This is a highly subjective question.  What is your budget?  Do you prefer classical or modern style?  It really depends on your "taste".  If money weye no object for ME, I would purchase this one:

with a case and board, but that is just me.  Your choice may be completely different and just as appropriate.

Also need to know what you are going to with it.  Will it be a set you will take to tournaments, a display set for your coffee table, or somewhere in between.  How functional does it need to be, and does it have to match the decor in your home.

This is my choice for a functional tounament set:

As above, I've got fine and delicate sets, and I've got simple and robust sets.

Different tasks, different tools are appropriate.

Check out Ebay.  Use a search for "staunton" once you're in the chess section to weed out all the goofy theme sets.  House of Staunton runs auctions there if you want top of the line, but there are plenty of "direct from India" sellers of very attractive knockoffs.  You should be able to get an HOS collector set in ebony or rosewood for something in the mid $200's at auction.  Do an advanced search for completed listings to get an idea of what sets have sold for in the past.  That will allow you to make an informed bid.  I recently scored a bud rosewood Sheffield 4.4" set (huge, I know) for less than $300 delivered.  The 4.0" sets are easier to find a board for and there are a number of custom board makers on Ebay also. Good luck.
