Here is an interesting article about Radha Jain's (English girl's under 9 champion) eating habits before chess events:

What eating tips do you have for fellow chess players?

I don't eat a meal before a game. I especially avoid putting starchy food in my system before a tournament game. I know my metabolism enough that food in my stomach makes me sluggish for a couple of hours. Pasta makes me outright sleepy. Chess is different than cycling. I load up on pasta a day before I go on a bike tour covering more than 30 miles. I can take coffee before or during a game. I also take a Vitamin B supplement for every day of a long tournament.

I ususally like snacking on chips while playing a game!

just regular healthy stuff - nothing too sugary, too heavy, too salty, or to spicy. lots and lots of water.

Well I naturally eat quite healthy, I was raised like this and it just seems to taste better to me. By test, I would say that the best diet for me (not just for chess, but for everything, including exhausting physical work and exercise) is to eat mostly fruits and vegetables and a bit of meat, like a good portion once a week or something - and I do think that the meat is an essential part, just not too much. I also think that a reasonable amount of tea/coffee (2-3 a day or so, no particular number) is very good for the concentration.

Interesting.. perhaps some sugar could get you high before a game! But not too much, or you'll be too jumpy during the game and get yourself complained to an arbiter for distracting your opponent!

My advice?! Contact a nutritionist...Smile The right foods are very important, and lots of water is not far off from being very important. The average person is dehydrated and doesn't even know it. The brain needs water like every other organ. Anything that zaps fluids from your body is even worse! As for foods, find those that offer long steady energy, i.e. not sugar!
