Went to my chess club last night and met the creator of an interesting new variant called Chess plus. Basically pieces can merge together to form superpieces, like the fairy Amazon ( Queen plus knight). The pieces may separate later but merging or separating still takes a move. Pawns can be carried to the eighth rank quickly by rooks, and traded for queens. Merging is not always best as a captured merged piece loses both pieces. You still start with basically the same power, but it can be used exponentially quicker, creating more unpredictability and complexity.
