Chess rating system

For instance I consider myself a 2400 player, but here I try to keep my rating at around 1700 so I can show myself progress.

just play for fun

the ratings will follow accordingly

Basically, the USCF and ELO systems rate you based on your play against other players.  The higher the opponent's rating, the more you gain in a win and less you lose in a loss - and vice-versa.  The Glicko system throws a curve into this by assuming if you don't play tournaments frequently, there's more uncertainty in your rating (though he doesn't reduce it!) and there should be a larger effect than normal on the rating changes when that's the case.

Doesn't matter. The rating formulas are essentially the same. One of my last wins in Daily, against someone close in rating to me gave me 24 points and the one before that was 17.

Glicko is a rating system created by Mark Glickman.

In playing my first game on Chess.com, I received a rating of 1200, before I played. Why, and how was that arrived at?

Ditto. I wasn't happy either. I'd much rather start at zero and be rags to riches..

"Started from the bottom...now we here..."
"Started from the bottom...now we here..."

Sing we me.

If you start off at zero you could end up with negative numbers.

I believe most rating systems have a built in minimum. For the USCF it is 100.

What if you lose at 100 USCF? It just stays there?
