prepared mind, and play chess with a relaxed,,,, ready
Chess rating system

This is an interesting topic. Everyone has different opinion and relate rating to various importance or none. To me i regard the rating as a measurement tools. Its the only thing that make me enjoy ( worth playing ) the chess game.
Playing in the park ( disregard rating ) with anybody is another way of enjoying chess game...its so much fun and relaxing...WINS and LOSE (or DRAW) is all that matters. RATING is not so much involve here. Then at the end of the day we pack up and go back home leaving behind all the game memory on the bench.
But when playing online or competition i fully satisfied with RATING involvement here. Its sort of an information to everything before starting a game with someone.

I could be wrong, but I assume she's talking about blitz games. There are lots of people who are great blitz players but terrible in long games, and vice versa.
regardless of if it is long games or blitz or rapid or lightning -- the clock is part of teh game and clock management is part of the game. If you lose on time from superior positions to low rated players in blitz, guess what -- you're a low rated player yourself! It doesn't matter if in 5 more moves you'd crush everyone because when the flag falls the game is over and if you are losing on time that is the same as losing to checkmate.

Ratings are the numbers that show how good you are.
:) :D :O :P :Q :C (=)
Well, these changes over time and dependent on practice ! The good thing is that we all players are good!!

turtle, the general points system followed is as follows:
pawn - 1pt.
knight/bishop - 3pts.
rook - 5pts.
queen - 10pts.
of course points are not everything... the position of your piece also matters.. for example you might not mind losing a bishop or rook to save a pawn on the 7th row.. and points dont have any bearing on the game result.. it is just a basic framework to help beginners understand the value of different pieces
Queens 9 points stupid!!!!

Oh yes it does! How well you play includes how well you manage your time. Time is as much part of Chess as it is in other games. In football you could score the greatest goal in history, but if the referee blows time before it goes in it doesn't count. Similarly in Chess if you don't get your moves in within the time, you lose, and correctly so.
Becca is so right! AlecKeen is so wrong!

queen - 10pts.
Queens 9 points stupid!!!!
If you're going to call someone stupid, it's usually best not to immediately precede it with a stupid statement of your own.

my rating was 2294 before the damn phone rang and it dropped to 2257 due to bad connection. Erik if you read this please make my rating back because in that match i had 1 min 30 left and he had less than 20 seconds left. On top of that i had material and positional advantage.
A definite candidate for silliest and whiniest post of the month.

I think what he meant was the connection went bad because of the phone ringing, not because he answered the phone. Be that as it may, I have lost at least two games in which I was winning because Time Warner Cable lost the connection. So what if I lost a couple of rating points because of it. It's not as if these points really counted anywhere outside of this forum anyway. I'm sure the USCF doesn't consider you a Master because your rating is above 2200 @ chess.com.
yeah it dosent matter the starting off rating it will change as you play
