Chess rating system

With reference to the "bloatation" factor referenced in a recent post, I would estimate it to be about 200 to 300 points based on my limited experience so far.  This is anecdotal based on some online/turn-based games (not live) I've played against certain opponents here which have mid-1500 chess.com ratings -- the quality of play was indicative of about 1200 USCF (OTB).  Similarly, I'm currently about 1500 USCF OTB but about 1750 here -- based on about 15 online games played.  (For what it's worth, my Tactics rating here is about 1550, and 1700 was the highest it ever has been.)

I offer this for general interest, not to re-open Pandora's box.  See earlier posts for "Ratings don't matter", "It's all relative", "Just play chess", and similar comments.

As an aside, it's unfortunate that this thread has mixed the discussion of ratings and the discussion of the relative value of the pieces.   Of course, some would argue that it's unfortunate that this thread exists at all. Smile

Jonrambo - I've played about 15 online games here (but no Live games) and I have 5 games active currently. I've been playing chess for about 40 years. My max rating ever was about 1650 USCF. It has been fairly stable between 1500-1600 for a long time. I've played several turn-based games on redhotpawn.com, where I have a rating of about 1550. All - from all this writing I'm sure I give the impression I'm obsessed with ratings. I'm not, but I do find the topic interesting so I check out this thread occasionally.

Innocent I think research on subject: Stupid and Tanky is not of much value in Chess games!!It seems these are derogative to games efficiency!! and luxary in idle  exercise.

I believe the rating system is great.Because it gives a player something to aim for.Which then can help improve his game over all.

Well TenaciousE, online games r not serious games. Point is the live games and the score from them.

I was stating my impression that Chess.com ratings are inflated compared to USCF ratings.  It is possible that we have a misunderstanding because of the terminology I used. I am using the Chess.com terminology.

Regardless, I believe that most people playing Online/turn-based games here (for example, time control of 3 days per move) take them very seriously, and thus provide a valid basis for ratings comparison.  (If you are referring to "Live" games played on Chess.com, it is possible that some people may take them less seriously, but I have no experience with Live chess on this site.)  If there is a serious flaw in my comparison, it is that I am comparing my USCF OTB rating to my Chess.com Online rating.

I was going to make a comment about my rating being stable (which is somewhat true), but clearly my performance from game to game is not always stable.  Last night I drew a 1900-rated player in a USCF-rated G/29 event.  I've also had tournaments where I've lost to 1200's.

If the topic of chess ratings is at all of interest, I suggest you read the old book: "The Rating Of Chess Players, Past & Present".  By the time you finish, you'll be tired of ratings and just want to go back to playing chess. Smile

my rating is 1459 in online chess but 1380 in live chess i know thats not a big difference but still my tactics rating is 1687 and from 1380 is a pretty huge difference. then there is my uscf rating 1211 four totally different ratings

Interesting.  Just the opposite of my experience. Is your USCF rating current (i.e., have you played any rated tournament games recently)?  How many USCF-rated games have you played?  If it is still a provisional rating, it will jump around a lot.

Hey boys, can u help? I have 2 questions and asked already many people but no one could answer 1) How can I choose my colour 2) How can I invite someone in a live game(I see only online available in

Cool You can join Friends and challenge one to play Live . Your pro picture color can be changed by yourself!!

Puchiko

You have to select "unrated" to be able to select a colour in live chess (see separate thread).

Puchiko

That's right, in a rated game, the colour is decided at random. This is because choosing your colour could give you an unfair advantage (before this rule change, there were many people who'd only play white).

If you want to challenge another person, the most convinient way is to have them on your friend list. When in live chess, just click the friend tab, click their name and challenge them!

More details: Playing live chess

Stormbringer

ok I understand all of that. but how does this rating system compare to the uscf? because otb im 1084 but here im 1337

Puchiko

It doesn't. Different pool of players, different ratings. Different conditions (how can you compare 2x5 or even 2x30 with four hour games), different ratings.

On average, most people do report being higher rated here than OTB. There is no magic formula, however. Ratings are uncomparable within different rating pools.

Puchiko

Um, I don't know  how to challenge a non-friend member. You need to click on their name somehow-for friends, the friends tab works. Others can be clicked on when they chat. If someone isn't a friend and isn't chatting, I don't think there's a way to challenge them.

Puchiko

Click on their name, and hit "challenge".
