I just won against an opponent whos rating was over 1400 but he was unrated. After winning I never received the points. What's the deal with being an unrated player and why did I not receive any points for beating him?

The game needs to go past the 3rd move to have an effect on rating from a timeout.

How can you be both rated over 1400 and unrated?

If you mean that the game was unrated, then my answer to you would be that unrated games never affect the ratings of the players; that's just how the site works.
