The backbone of chess.

"a king be in check" is unclear because improper english.
But it seems you're asking if a king can be in check if nothing is threatening it (no)
Or if a king is allowed to move into check (no)
0110001101101000: Sorry you had trouble with my english and missed the point. It would have been better if phrased as "Can a square be attacked by an illegal move?".
ChessOfPlayer: Thanks for FIDE reference. The second paragraph under article 3.1 answers my question. Check can be delivered by a move illegal according to rule 1.2.
Hmm, it's just a strange sort of question. Maybe given an example?
In a real game, an illegal move can put you in check, sure, but hopefully you will notice and make the player take back the move. In a tournament game (like FIDE or USCF) the player making the illegal move can be penalized on the clock, or even forfeited by the director / arbiter who is in charge of enforcing the rules.
Is there a clear set of Chess rules somewhere? Specifically a rule that implies a King be in check even if there is no legal move threatening the King?
