Chess Set Identification?

Avatar of jimowen74

Dear Community,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this message, please forgive me if it is not.

I am desperatly trying to identify a chess set i was recently given by a close friend.

It does not appear to have any distinguishable marks from a particular maker. I have managed to identify it as solid brass, as it wheighs an awfull lot, and is not magnetic etc.

Please see the picture below.

Any help or pointers anyone can provide would be most welcome and greatly appriciated.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

Jim

I can't help you on the ID, but DAMN that looks like a nice set!  Is it complete?

Probably some anonymous set from India (as would be expected from a brass set, and the design of the knight).

Hi raths,

thanks for your comment, yes the set is complete, it needs a little bit of tidying up, but on the whole it's in nice condition, so i want to restor it then use it as my primary set.

goldendog - thanks for your comments also. When you say 'Probably' because of the design of the knight, do you have a company in mind in India that produces that sort of knight design, maybe i can contact them to check.

Thanks again guys, really appriciated.

Before the western markets started asking for sets that looked like traditional English Staunton pattern sets, let's say 30 or so years ago, the Indians had their own ideas on how a Staunton pattern should look. It was the whole industry there (probably in Amritsar but don't quote me on that) that did knights with that Indian flavor. So, it probably wouldn't help you to contact a manufacturer, but if you wished to just pick one of the many there and who knows, maybe you'll get lucky.

I do wish you luck!

Check sets on E-bay for comparison.  There are loads of them, some of them quite cool, bizarrely most of them seem to have pieces missing.
