Chess set materials

Chess pieces material.

What is the material most used to fabricate chess pieces?

No doubt that wood is the classical and noblest material for that issue, but it is handicapped by the weakness found at the base of the cross on top of the King, which can easily broke if the piece falls.

So, manufacturers have found a material which looks like wood (I have a fine set made in France) but is not wood and is not that commonly named "plastic" material.

Would any of you know something about it?

Thanks

Polyresin?

Fiberglass?

I honestly haven't heard of any materials that match your description.

There have been plastic-imposturing-as-wood sets--simple unweighted ones.

I can think of other tough materials, like delrin, that have been used but they don't pass as wood.
