FWIW I got an astounding amount of mileage out of an obsolete copy of Fritz 12 I bought for $6.99 from Amazon in 2013.
Scid vs PC has a horrible interface, but is seriously powerful and absolutely free.

I had some spare coin and splurged on ChessBase. It's flat amazing but costs a few hundred dollars.
My suggestion is that you read up on software you might like and buy a version from five years ago. Unless you are an international master or better, it won't matter. Then you can figure out what you really might want.

I have been playing chess for many years, but I am relatively new to chess.com. And I'm not a very strong player. What is the best chess software for learning and improving your game?
This is obviously a matter of opinion, and I am expecting people to have differing opinions...
