Chess Software Recommendation

I'm creating some trees of chess openings for self-study. For this, I'd like a program that'd let me freely arrange pieces on a board and create a .jpg black & white image of the board that I could paste into a Word document. It'd be great if the image were in one of the standard formats that most chess books use (like MCO, or Gambit books, etc.--you probably know what I mean).

Secondly, I'd like a chess program that would let me move pieces around without rule checking. That way, when reading a chess book, I could easily arrange my chessboard to match the board position, and then I could study it from there. (I don't need a program to tell me which moves are legal: I just want to set up a board position without laboriously stepping through all the prior moves.)

Any suggestions? (Thank you!)
