Ah I don't know, I don't see how reading could possibly hurt. They are probably assuming that the time you can spend on chess is limited and advising you how to spend it more economically.

I dont think you know what you'r talking about.
Why should a chess coach should not be good until 1600? I think that a chess coach is the best way, to be helped on the right way, when your interrested in chess but aint that good.
And use time on openings? That is the dumbest thing you can do in that stage. Tactics and endgame is what you should become better in. And i dont really se why read less should be a good idea?
HELLO everyone, i love chess, although i am not a good player i spend most of my chess time playing over grandmaster games from the internet. i have a fair amount of chess books which i often browse through when i am interested. i want to become a good player though. i tried hard to understand the games to improve my own play. i know there are a lot of material available to study chess but i believe i need a chess coach.
