Chess thought process

I've been playing chess for a while and find myself to be exceptionally good at blitz whereas my standard chess is rather mediocre in comparison to blitz (I won't talk about bullet as it is, in a way, not really chess. Furthermore, I have a poor internet connectionFrown). After a bit of analysis, I found out that it is because I don't know how to think of a better move with my extra time. Simply put, whether you give me 1 minute or 10 seconds for a single move, the quality of it is more or less the same. So, being a self-taught chess player, I am not familiar with the concept of thought process. At the moment, I have a simple way of thinking- If I see a tacitic, check then play it. If there is no tactic, make the position open for more tactical lines. And it all comes down to this question, how to use my extra time to think of a better move?

Edit: Also, while I am very familiar with tacitcs, I tend to struggle when it comes to strategical thinking. I've tried chess mentor but I feel that those are exaggerated examples that do not appear in my games. If possible, could you help me with that too.

Kotov's classic Think like a grandmaster might be what you're looking for. Not to be followed slavishly necessarily but it does demand some investment of time and discipline.

mind you , i'm hardly theone totake advice from, but given time i search for all  my foes least protected pieces and think : If i make a play for that piece will they have to devert a piece from there power focus ? many times when i win its because ive made a false line of attack and then swithced away. However just as possible  is that i over commit to the fake and out balance myself

I don't see how you can be 'exceptionally good' at 'blitz' {chess}.. Given, your admission, to having the same dilllema, that 'average' players, experience - Re. Not necessarliy choosing, the 'best' one or 2 moves.. On a regular basis, apparently!?

What I meant was that, as compared to my rapid rating, my blitz rating is higher by a fair bit.

Read a strategy book. Read an endgame book.
