20 years ago I chose to play the Sicilian defence and an experience player told me continue on with it. I am really glad that I stuck with it because it’s a defence I can play for life and never be bored with.

Most coaches will tell you not to learn the Sicilian because it is heavy in theory and hence stick with 1.e4, e5.

As white, I was told to open up with e4, develop the minor pieces, castle, connect the rooks and then fight for the center.

Sit on your hands!

This is to avoid hasty, impulsive moves that often turn out to be blunders.

Don't strive to be a titled player.  The amount of effort you have to put in to get there is not worth it and there is not much you can do with the title other than teaching and making videos.
