How come certain checkmates another piece is highlighted when there is no direct contribution to the mate?

waffllemaster

From what I remember it highlights only the pieces involved in the mate.  Look a little closer maybe?  Maybe post the position and tell us which are highlighted?

I moved Qf5 to h3 to deliver mate.  Why was the f3 pawn highlighted?

Thanks =p.

Any idea Waffle?

Would you say the pawn has no direct contribution to the mate?

I understand guarding the g2 square is redundant because the queen also guards this square.  But for example if I asked you to compare how the bishop on h5 is related to the mate and how the pawn on f3 is related what differences could you find?

Anyway, I'm sure you can answer that easily :p  The real answer is probably something like the programmer found it unnecessary to spend extra effort writing code that can identify redundant pieces and not highlight them.  In that case the highlighting would seem random though and someone might ask, why did it choose these pieces and not those?
