Any thoughts of stopping world hunger or any other big issue is pure day dreaming...it is natural for men to be selfish destroyers of the earth for their own greed and self gratification...look at the misery and havoc and waste foisted on the world by its leaders...currently Putin and others!

You really think it's Putin? What's your favourite movie, CNN?

Yes, him along with many other world leaders who make for war and untold suffering ...I dont follow CNn or any news channel, they are peddlers of gloom and supports of the ruling war mongers

Well I think nobody beats U.S. and their little cute dog Europe...

Yes there is no nation or grouping of nations that are innocent of spreading the misery of their greedy ambitions that cause destruction and suffering... in the name of religion or capitalism or freedom or happiness or whatever the foul excuse for anti human behaviour

I ran one event that gave all entries to a charitable organization and one other that provided some money to support another one.

It's a juggling act to try and have an event that will pull in enough people that will pay to play for little or no prize chances and still have enough to give to the charity. And to get a location that is free or cheap enough to not take too much from either any prizes (if you have them) or from money available for the charity.

Not impossible to do and other organizers do it on occasion. Not sure how much it actually promotes chess though.

I thought, because of the prestige of chess, that the top players would be interested. The idea of them playing in a sponsored tournament where all the proceeds generated go to charity. :)

It's possible something like that could work. Though, the sponsors could just give the money directly and not have any other costs associated with holding an event.

It is a common fallacy today to think that simply giving money will solve major problems facing our world. The world doesnt need charity it needs revolution in our thinking. Charity, the giving of our money to a good cause simply soothes our consciences and gives a feeling of moral worth whilst the problems continue to grow and multiply.

I've had it. Instead of fighting world hunger, organizers put together greedy events to make money and feed egos. Why can't they run a charity tournament to stop world hunger?

As others have said, do it yourself. No one is stopping you. If other individuals feel compelled to do so, they will do it, or perhaps they could do something they thing is a better way to spend their money.

The collective "tournaments to feed the hungry" and for any cause are collective event that makes everyone donate money to another individual or an organization and then they're supposed to hope all that money goes to the advertised cause.

I dislike things like that because a lot of charities are run by crooks and someone always makes up stuff to do to make others donate.

How about this. Win a monetary prize in that tournament then donate it to wherever you want.

You don't win it? Then go and ask the winner to give his money away.

Correct. Give some money to a derelict begging in the street, and he will just be there again the next day.

I was thinking in the way of starving children, but homeless as well. Let me ask you, does starvation seem so repugnant to the working class unless it's your own? Let me tell you, starvation is painful. No one deserves to suffer, no matter how poor. Most people don't have a choice, and even if they did, do we just let them starve on the street? A lot of people said I should do it on my own. I already do, but I thought making an actual impact would mean something to the chess world. Apparently not. gens una sumus.

I think the estimated cost to eliminate hunger worldwide is around $30 billion (USD) per year. Good luck.

Sorry but that's nothing.

Murgen

When a population doesn't balance itself, nature balances it: starvation, epidemics, war etc.

Human ingenuity can ward off these things for a while... that allows problems to get bigger before coming to a head (on a grander scale).

Water can be removed from the ocean with a teaspoon - but the ocean won't get emptied that way.
