excuse me if this is slightly off topic, but

do you ever go on a vacation to play chess in another country or visit a local chess club?

e.g. some visit the freedom of liberty in New York some visit a local chess club lol

I might someday go to another country to a play at tournament I think I would still be able to enjoy the country.

I've played chess in a few places in England and done some site seeing en passant as it were :-)

Played in a tournament in an hotel in Hereford just down the road from the cathedral and went to see the Mappa Mundi in between rounds...

Last year in tournament in Chester after I was given a round bye I walked round it's city walls that boast the most complete and oldest dating back to Roman times..

Places I wouldn't have gone out of the way to otherwise visit...

Chess and tourism go well together...

...........

Here's a question for someone. How come so many GMs can afford to travel and play chess when there is supposed to be so little money in the game ? I just notice looking at games of many of England's finest over the years how far they've travelled ? Some English players are very good but it surprises me how many of the middle order GMs, which English GMs are for the most part, seem to apparently make a living from chess from jet setting ...

I guess because most places GM,IM,WGM,WIM are entering tournaments for free.

I've read about one of the biggest tournament in denmark called Politiken Cup it says GM,IM,WGM,WIM entry fee is free.

I am not attending but I have to pay 900 if I want to enter.

If anyone goes to the Reykjavik Open, as well as the places shown here you might want to visit Fischer's Rock.

In many Open events ALL the expenses of GM are paid, including hotel/travel/food as well as entry fee. Some even get a little "pocket/spending" money every day as well... or so I am told......

Oh right, thanks.

Do their sponsors hope to gain financially or are they doing it to show "how generous" they are - "promoters of the art and sciences etc" ?
