chess tournament points and place

can some explain how the place system works. I notice even if I have the same number of wins I may be ahead or behind someone. why is that? and what do the points mean for the winners?

Points are only meaningful within a pairing group. Overall points don't matter, except maybe in players that don't make it to the last group.
For tournament points that are received for placing in a tourney, those are just for the tournament leaderboard.
