Hello1i am a chess teacher in our place and most of my students were able to compete in regional level by winning ofcourse in the lower meet.can anyone help me with one of my students who is an intelligent boy.He solves basic tactics problems,we studied openings...etc.but the problem is he a hyper-active child that makes him make the moves quick when playing and so make mistakes then lose. How to handle such attitude of a boy?Hope someone could help me because i really believe he has a potential.thanks so and more power.

Has he been diagnosed with ADHD? I am not for medication but if it helps him in general then that may be a good thing.

I have a habit of stomping in for the kill and it ends in misery. I have to learn to sit back and think about it. I think it comes about due to some anxiety problem that I have. Try getting him to stop and think. Maybe after his opponent moves he has to wait a minute before he can move again. During this time he could make a list of the current position and best moves. If he followed a methodical left to right pattern across the board, noting positions, threats and best moves; that may help him make better decisions. This is something I am trying.

All the best!

Hook him up with hard problems.  Have him try to solve them and have him spending at least 5 minutes on each one.  If they are not solved, discuss the position with him.  Try to motivate him and keep him interested.  Many younger players are hyperactive with a slower game like chess.  Make him see the fun in thinking slow and deep.

Thanks so much Simon and Chessofplayer for your replies.that is what im thinking maybe he is an adhd child,im just being careful of asking the parents.Anyway, i have tried basic tactics problem with him,we almost finish the book of john nunn learn chess tactics and the boy is really doing it good that's why i am convinced that he has a potential and that the only problem is his being hyperactive. I keep on looking for strategies to handle such situation.I will try to do your suggestions, simon and chessofplayer.thanks so much and more power.

 Hello,

I don't know what the child's behavior is like and I am not an expert. I have mild autism and know others that are "on the spectrum". Without knowing the child's behavior it is difficult to say what is required. It could be that he gets bothered by not knowing the answer, as do I. I am not sure of what to say to the parents and making a suggestion like that could be very awkward and end with a bad result. Like you say, careful of asking the parents. I like the fact that you are behind him, a lot of the teachers that I know at school were quite unpleasant and had no interest.

Good luck to you both!
