Chess TV

I know that due to the complexity of the game it wouldnt grasp the interest of a mass television audience.

I was just wondering if chess.com could stream a channel like on justintv or something similar. They could stream live tutorials, chess.com promotions, random matches/demonstrations, or even chess.com tourney matches. I know there is already or has been a chess-tv thing here on the site but this could be good publicity for chess.com and I for 1 would be very interested.....

The trouble is that Chess is not ideal for spectators.  Much of a Chess match is literally a couple of guys (or girls) sitting studying a position.  This is, frankly, tedious even if you know the rules.  As a result of that it needs something to run along side it to make it more entertaining without going off on a tangent.

Most of the Chess.com videos are of an excellent quality, I was particularly impressed with IM D.Prues Chess Kids video. Cool

Agreed, I believe it would be interesting to stream a match against 2 top notch players w/ commentary from other top notch players who are analyzing and disscussing possible moves/strategies that the players may be considering. I feel there would be much to learn from that sort of stream.....

Given that TV is becoming more interactive these days, let the viewers make the moves themselves (in the style of Vote Chess). Display the percentages for each move, and let the pundits discuss where the viewers have gone wrong! You could even have a gambling tie-in where viewers can bet on future moves.

I hadn't actually thought of chess betting before, but it seems to have been around for a while, judging by some betting websites, e.g.:

Putting your money where your mouth is
11.11.2003 – Kasparov vs X3D Fritz. What will be the opening move? How many checks will there be in each game? What will be the final score? Who will win each game? If you think you know the answer to any of these questions, then why not back your judgement at the [*******] online betting exchange.

Name deleted by me. Just for the record, I'm not a betting person.

But coming back to the subject, chess is too passive a sport to appeal to spectators 'en masse' (as A.McHarg rightly said), so what about tapping into pop culture and naming the pieces after celebrities to get kids' interest up. "Queen" Rihanna gets pinned by "Bishop" Justin Timberlake, or "White Knight" Eminem gets whacked by "Black Knight" Puff Daddy. It could work you know. It will revolutionize chess through the tv medium.LaughingCool

I mean look at this list of chess-playing celebs: and ask yourself "What are they doing for chess?" All it would take is for a few of them to say "I love chess!!" and there would be a chess boom.
