Chess vs Bridge Popularity

thats a good question Fred... i have never played bridge.. ... is bridge easier to play than chess? I agree with tygxc... idk Fred...love Reno!!! that i know. peace brother..

Bridge is a four-player partnership game, with a large interactive social following.
Whereas Chess is a two-person game with less social interaction.

I love both games but the fact that one needs to learn a biding system before being able to play makes bridge much less accessible than chess IMO.

You do noy have to learn a bidding system: there are also natural bidding systems as opposed to the artificial, conventional bidding systems.
The essence of bridge is not the bidding, but rather the play after the contract was bid.
Learning a bidding system is far easier than learning all the endgame knowledge you need to play chess.

Bridge is historically more popular. It appeals to women more than chess does, and just based on that fact there is almost double the customer base. It is also a social event and possibly has more comradery due to that nature, positively affecting its appeal. However bridge doesn't seem to be replacing the players who are aging out, but chess is very popular with kids. Potentially long term chess will surpass bridge.
Hi All,
Is chess more popular than bridge? I am trying to get an unbiased opinion on the popularity of both as a means of determining the market potential of chess in a small city market, such as Reno Nevada. My question is not about which is the better game, both are really great. Here in Reno, we are using the local bridge club facilities and they have about 4 times as many members as we have. The bridge club is open 6 days a week with both day and evening events. We in the chess club primarily have one night a week. So, is bridge more popular or are we chess players here doing a poor job of promoting our passion?
