"Recognized" is probably not the right word here. The IOC exerts control over international sports; the more things that are "sports," the more things IOC can control.

How is soccer not a real sport? I suppose your version of football where loads of men in tights jump on top of each other is a "real" sport then?

Um, whatever else one might think about American football, I don't think you can reasonably assert that the players are less "manly" than soccer players, even if they do wear tights.

I don't think it's as much tights, as the fact that American footbal players wear 50 pounds of protection equipment.  There's really only one 'manly' sport in that regard - and I call it Rugby.  American Footbal is pretty much Rugby for sissies.

If you really think that, I suggest that you don rugby attire and then get some football players to hit you at full speed like they get hit during a game. I suspect you'd be either permanently injured or killed. Rugby players don't wear protective equipment because it's possible to survive a rugby game without it.

Have you ever heard or seen Shinty? It's like Hockey, except they are allowed to thump the rock solid ball as hard as they can at head height (not at heads though), yet no one wears helmets!!!

There is brave, and then there is just pure stupid :)

There must be some old army boys here that used to play murder ball before it was banned. (No, I've never played, or been in the army).

Oh, and for the record, football has reduced me to tears of ectasy, chess has reduced me to tears of fustration.

Russia for Euro 2008!

In addition to that we have Gaelic Football and Hurling, which just happens to be the fastest team sport in the world.
