Chessbase 15 reference search very slow

Sort:
Son-of-Caissa

Im using chessbase 15 and Mega database 2017 as my reference. Whenever i go to the reference window in a position, chessbase either freezes by going on full screen for a short while ( it comes back to normal after few seconds) or it takes 30-60 seconds to complete its reference search. And when i go to the next move, the same thing happens again. Anyone has any solutions for this? ive seen reference search come instantly in some other people's chessbase

I  dont get why that would happen . Im sure many people are using old databases and their reference search comes fast

It opens pretty fast. A few seconds at most. When I’m early in a game and there are consequently millions of reference games, it sometimes takes five to ten seconds to update from one move to the next. Sometimes, ChessBase will freeze for ten to twenty seconds, but usually because I’m moving too fast, asking it to do something else while it is busy.

I have found with every version of ChessBase that I’ve used and on every computer that I could crash the program by trying to do something else while it was searching.

Twenty years ago, my database was Chessmaster (maybe seventh edition) and my computer was a Pentium I. The database contained a few hundred thousand games and a position search required fifteen minutes. ChessBase has always been faster. I’ve been using CB since 2003.

im not sure but chessbase had one tool called The “search booster”
"is a file which is used to increase the speed (by a factor of about 100!) at which ChessBase can find positions, material and manoeuvres. The search booster consists of a file which has the extension “.CBB”. It can be generated by the program for any database. The file uses 52 bytes per game. You get greater speed in return for using more space on your hard disk, and must decide whether the trade-off is desirable on your system."
google it

Does anyone know how to search games from a certain position by a certain player? For example, Sergei Tiviakov's games as White after e4 c5 c3.

Yes. I can create a screenshot when I’m in front of my computer, but I’m using my iPad right now and enjoying the summer eve with a bottle of wine on the patio with my bride.

1. First set up the position.

2. Then select the "game data" tab  and type the name of the player. Uncheck "ignore player color" if you only want games with White.

This search resulted in 150 games in Mega2020.

Same here.

@Ziryab, thanks for replying, but I can't find how to set up the position in Chessbase. Where is it?

I start with a chess board and enter the moves. Usually when I do this, it is because I am studying a game or batch of games. Then, I right-click the database that I want to search and choose search.

That brings up this dialog box.
Choose advanced, which brings up:

By default it opens in the game data tab, so I choose the position tab.

Then, copy board puts the position from the game board into the search mask.

The learning curve for ChessBase is steep. When I started using it seventeen years ago, the ChessBase site had links to a bunch of videos by Steve Lopez that explained the basics. The program has changed a lot since (adding many features), but most of the common operations are still as they were two decades ago.

I rarely need to think about these operations any more as I have done them thousands of times.

Thanks. I followed your instructions, and it finaly worked. Chessbase is an insanely complicated software to use effectively. I would have never figured it out on my own.

There are some good links from this article: https://en.chessbase.com/post/manuals-2019-chessbase15

It's sometimes a bit slow because the megabase is so big. But normally you don't need all these million games from lower rated players.

You can create a new smaller database, and copy only games from 2200+ rated players (or what you need) in the new database and make it your reference database.

yeah you can also create seperate databases for different openings. But when you just open a board and want to analyze your games, the reference feature  being slow is a problem
