And yes it absolutely matters.  I am sure in Germany you guys are used to just accepting whatever version of the truth the "authorities" tell you.  That's really caused a lot of problems for Europe over the last 100 years or so.

I for one am heartened to see more of these threads questioning that silly 7 million figure.  It shows the users here aren't just a bunch of sheeple.

That is a horrible thing to say. You have just shown how offensive and closed minded you are.

I didn't like it either. Plus, TheBigDecline is a very nice guy, doesn't deserve this shit.

check chess.com homepage, it is in the upper right box.

Also, this belongs in the Chess.com Community section.

(Edit) Actually, whoa, this site is even more duplicitous than I thought!  I checked some of the "newest members" on the page you cited, and one was registered in July 2012, and the other two I checked registered in Jan. 2013.  Whats up with that?

(2d edit) I just checked the rest of the "newest members" listed.  One was registered in Sept 2012, one in October 2012, and two more in Jan. 2013.  That is pretty sad.

Alright, I gotta admit, staff has some explaining to do! That's new for me.

(Just noticed your edits after I submitted my last post)

Oh well, perhaps you were right after all ... I thought all of those guys were really new members but I guess I was deceived.

I looked at the link that was presented.Frank you are right in every way.I think it is proof enough that the site inflates facts of its popularity but I understand it and I love this site

Thanks for all your praise, guys! Smile

Maybe they are just selecting the people with the nicer looking avatars to be displayed in the New Members section, yet the number of new people is still truthful ... I don't care.

Yeah,sure...Probably 4000 members that just got kicked for computer use lol..There is no way that many people just joined today.Logic

Ok, I don't know, but I suspect there are separate rankings for blitz, standard, and online.

Also, I suspect that the figures shown are users who are considered "active" by the Glicko rating system.  So it's not surprising to me that there are maybe a million active blitz players and 300k active online Chess players.

If there is somewhere between 1 and 2 million active players (ie, players who have a RD low enough to be relevant), that's a pretty good pool of players.

I suspect that on most chess sites (especially free ones) the majority of accounts are inactive.

Not sure why anyone would get upset about this...

This comment is unacceptable. It shows what darkness is in your heart and filling your mouth!

Well, he's kinda right about the "accepting every truth the authorities forced on people" - thingy, leading to chaos and mayhem in Europe.

But let's face it, people, if it wouldn't have happened, the History Channel would be broke by now.

doh.....obvious larger number is duplicates and old players....only 10 thousand plus live..equal about 300 thousand active members

chess mirrors life when you have to accept what is forced on you ...look around the world and see it writ large in every country!

are some of you guys that gullible to believe anything and everything you read or see on the internet...even on chess.com?

YES of course they are! How else do you explain the acceptance (by some people) of astrology, creationism, "intelligent design," "chariots of the gods," fake moon landings, etc etc etc

What's important here isn't how many members chess.com has but why some people get so offended at the thought of anyone else NOTmindlessly believing everything they're told and read without at least thinking about it, for say, four or five nanoseconds at least.  They all need to read "1984" and "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, and that's just for starters.

great comment NimzoRoy!...I for one am staggered at the credibility given to the Big Bang Theory...creationism and intelligent design for me are  the best explanation of things that are...simply superb doctrines!

How many active members on average per week would be a better question to inquire about Smile

7 thousand and still growing

So we are working woth rounded figures 7000 out of 7,000,000 (this is the total number of members, I have no doubt at the rate at which "members" join chess.com by the end of the week it will be that figure), which is less than 1% of the total population lol

Avatar of landwehr

who cares about numbers either number of members or rating number?

Avatar of Conflagration_Planet

Probably about eight thousand, active. At least this isn't missing.
