Has Chess.com inspire you to play OTB ?
what I meant was, the peoples who has never played chess before and has joined up in the chess.com, did it encourage them to play in the club or tournament now. What should I have said differently ?
I was playing OTB long before the emergence of a web browser
Yes, my question wouldn't apply to you, nor to me as I have played in a club before seeing this website.
I saw the title and thought, "No Kco! What do you think you are doing spreading the cancer with threads like chess.com rating compared to otb?!", then I read the op.
You just passed enough to avoid the spam brigade for the moment.
I joined online chess as I have stopped OTB long back due to commitments. I had good outings between 1971 to 1991 at University to Middle East open tourneys including some really good tournament wins. No record except for a few newspaper cuttings now. Definitely OTB and chess.com are different experiences. Been fun .. Thanks chess.com
Yes.. Those were the days, we studied all opening patterns on board.. No DB, No computer analysis. Spend hours on single board positions.. Hard way to learn
Come to think of it, I too was playing OTB tournaments before internet chess was around. And I'm only 28! Depressing thought...
I think that most people start OTB since that's how most people learn the rules. A more interesting topic would be "Did you start playing OTB or online?"
I personally started playing on chess.com because I know very few people around here who actually play chess and there are no clubs in town (probably because of chess.com...)
I won't ask...
I started playing OTB before the internet existed. This lead me to believe most chess players were thoughtful and polite. Note that I think there is often a big difference between polite and nice. Bobbyyyy you state: "The problem is chess players are annoying.... Chess players are the rudest people on Earth." I do like the fact that you make this point even if I don't entirely agree; as Bruce Lee said:
"It is indeed difficult to see the situation simply--our minds are very complex--and it is easy to teach someone to be skillful, but it is difficult to teach him his own attitude."
My experience suggests that there are a lot of annoying people, and the ones who play chess, being thinkers, put a lot of thought into their rudeness. I suspect that there are plenty of the worst types of criminals and con-artists--to me these are the rudest people on Earth--who don't know a thing about chess. Most of the people I've played OTB were very well-mannered. However I never play in tournaments.

For all the peoples who have joined up here in the last 5 years to learn about chess, has it encourage you play at the club or tournament ? (edit: to make sense
)
