I am trying to figure out why I would struggle against the computer set at 1200. I am rather puzzled. Are many of us here over rated and thus have inflated the the tactics trainer and chess mentor or am I missing something ?

In the past I was able to easily win with white at 1200 against the computer, sometimes struggle with black but win more than not and even win at 1600 with white sometimes. It seems like that computer got much more difficult.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this is?

@ Staff...

I just figured out more to this mystery. I played this game with the computer set on 1200, but check out the PGN file I took from the game. Notice that it says the level was hard. If this is the anomaly I am experiencing, it makes sense. I would rate the level of play I just experienced as comparable to the games I played at 1600 previously. Can someone look into this ?

Metastable

That's really funky - all the other settings (beginner, easy, hard, and expert) correctly transfer to the PGN. Only medium gets changed in the PGN as you saw.

I Usually do good against the computur medium and Easy. The Coputer seemed to me to be like the mechanical turk. and if you stick to the basics. the easy and medium will Gambit a 3 point piece for a pawn Twice during the game .

Any updates on this question?  What is the computer strength on this site?

Shouldn't you be able to tell if it is playing hard easy or medium by the moves it makes? I'm not good at reading PGN so I dunno what moves it made.

I have had the 1200 cut me apart worse that the 2000+ setting. I actually questioned once if they were backwards...

What about the strength of the iPhone app? The difficulty range is 1-10

nameno1had

IDK...other than it thinks for 1-10 secs before moving

Is there a way to have the iPhone chess computer play against an engine such as rybka where the rating is known to find out the approximate level?

I've had the 1600 setting beat me really badly and then other times it gives pieces/pawns away for no reason more than once during the game.  My theory is, avoid tactics and wait and it will eventually give you stuff.

It's interesting the pgn doesn't match the setting though.  But anyway, I wouldn't put too much faith in those ratings.

I Think That playing a Human is harder than the Computer here. The Humans don't give away as many pieces...
