Chess.com's rating system

Hi everyone,

 I was just wondering that when I joined this site, my rating was 1200. How do they know my my style/ way of playing but just give me 1200??? I'm confused.

oh ok. but i still don't really understand. why must it be 1200?/

if your good it's gonna go up, if you're bad it's gonna go down, if  your average i suspect you may stay around 1200 for a while, especially if you play alot of games, i mean it doesn't really matter

 better to start of with an average rating other than goin too high or low

1200 is supposed to be the average rating in the elo rating system, so most chess playing websites start all players at 1200.
