I own the chessmaster challenge and love the tutorials given by Yasser Seirawan.  A friend asked me to recommend a game to purchase with similar tutorials to help him learn. (He isn't online and can't download a game or come to the mecca of chess learning here at chess.com)  Does anyone know anything about Chessmaster: The Art of Learning or Chessmaster the Grandmaster Edition? Do either or both games offer tutorials to instruct both myself and my friend?

I own "The art of learning Chessmaster Grandmaster edition"  The program has The Chessmaster Academy.  Which features three sets of instructors,  Josh Waitzkin's academy, Larry Christian's attacking chess, and The Chessmaster series.  All three courses have a lot of lessons in them from really basic to what I believe to be reasonably intermediate lessons.  A good amount of material to study along with a large database of games and openings to play through.  Without online access I would say that this is an econamical purchase for what you are looking for.  If you are willing to spend the money you can buy Chess Mentor.  The deluxe version is $180, very expensive, but you get over 2000 problems to work through with detailed explanations and good hints.  I believe there is a level lower fro $80 to $90 that you lose a lot of the more advanced lessons, but you can notplay against it.  Here is the link for the chess mentor site and the lessons each version has.  http://chessmentor.com/lessons.html   I would  suggest shopping for it  online else where you should be able to save 10 or so dollars off the price.  Which ever you choose good luck to you and enjoy playing chess.

I agree, Chessmaster: Art of Learning is full of excellent beginner-intermediate tutorials with audio and interactivity at a bargain price. Chess Mentor is also very good... it satisfies a broader range of difficulty levels but at a much higher price point... definitely worth consideration after your friend finishes off the Chessmaster tutorials.
