Can anyone help me find where I can download/buy Chessmaster Challenge or a similar program?

Why? It's a crappy program. They stopped making it several years after they stopped caring about it. Once they made version 10, they had completely given the program over to the dark side. Shockingly, they then came out with 11.

No, Chessmaster is not crappy at all. Great for anyone from beginner all the way up to 2400 level.

I never used Chessmaster Challenge, but I understand that it was a simplified version of Chessmaster that had a scaled down interface and scaled down tutorials. (I guess the advantage was that it was downloadable.) So I guess it's not as nearly as good as the regular versions.

The regular Chessmaster versions had some significant limitations, but the tutorials were pretty good for us novices. If I had to get a copy today, I'd probably look for a copy of Chessmaster 10 on eBay, keeping in mind that you'll want to deal with reputable sellers, and you'll want to get a copy that has the CDs (or DVD) in good, readable condition. (The disks have a very strong copy protection scheme, so you probably won't be able to make backup copies.)

Thank you all. I used Chessmaster Challenge to teach classes of adult beginners, it was perfect for that, and the classes enjoyed it++.Lost it (long sad story). Tried to get it from softonic it came with a virus. People are asking me to run the course again, but without projecting the game on a big screen so we can all solve puzzles etc.. together, I'm afraid there wouldn't be much laughter and enthusiasm.

I'll take your advice EscherehcsE and look for the 10th edition on eBay or Amazon. Thanks heaps!

Yeah, too many of those sites like Softonic and CNET use wrappers to load crapware (or worse) onto your PC. Best to stay away from those sites.

I forgot to mention: If you ever do get a copy of Chessmaster 10, after installing, you should apply the three patches (available from the Ubisoft forum). In addition to fixing a lot of bugs, these patches will allow you to run Chessmaster 10 without needing the disk to be in the computer's CD/DVD drive. That way, you can put the disks away in a safe place so that they won't get damaged.
