Opening and middlegame are important too, because they lead you to endgame.
mpukis speaks true, if you don't make it through the opening and middle you won't ever see an end...
That said, if you do ever get there I just took a good course: "Pawn play in the end game" by IM John Grefe. It was excellent. Well annotated and easy to understand (most of the time) even though it's a VERY difficult subject. But if you plan to get better at your end game you better learn pawn play!
I have heard that you should learn from chess from the end game backwards since the point of the openning and mid game is to set up a winning end game position. I have done a few chess mentor exercises and enjoyed them.
I think the reason people say to learn endgames first, is because there are only few pieces left, so you learn how to use those few pieces in many ways, instead of a chaos of 32 pieces at a time:)
