I just started recently to play this awesome game which is very interesting and similar to international chess.

I was wondering elderly or anyone else, people who play in the parks etc... do they normally bet $$$ like mahjong or ... ?

As far as Hong Kong is concerned, gambling with a normal xiangqi game is not a common thing. There are some who display xiangqi puzzles ( most of them very difficult ) as a challenge in the street corners for a wager.

What about western chess in Hong Kong? Common?

Now there are more junior events besides the regular HK championships. At the same time, there is very little media coverage of chess events. It was not so before 2000 when the South China Morning Post (an English medium newspaper ) had a regular column about chess events on Saturdays. In the public libraries, there is at least a copy of Chess Life magazine while there are fewer books on chess.

If I remember correctly, Sam Sloan discussed customs in his Chinese Chess book, but I do not remember what he wrote about betting on the game.

In Hong Kong, people are more keen on gambling on card games ( some Chinese ones ), mahjong,horse-racing and soccer games. Gambling on Xiangqi is definitely not common. Sam Sloan may be not so updated about this .

I do not remember the specific time or location that he was writing about.
