I guess for me I would prefer to lose rather than sit idle whilst the opponent has quietly slipped away like a coward. In fact I have been known to resign the game when it's obvious the opponent is a clock sucker. My time is worth more than a win.

Then I have an easy solution for you: start another game. You are a premium member, so you can play multiple games at the same time.

If someone is just letting the clock run, just start the next game and play it. In my experience, over 90% of those letting the clock run won't make a move before their time runs out, so just play your new game and enjoy chess and don't bother about the 10% or so you might lose because they make a move at the last second.

This is what I do most of the time, however I RESIGN rather than abandon.

There is no reason to resign, you can have both games active at the same time.

I have a hard time playing more than one 5 minute blitz game at a time, that is my reason.

If your opponent is letting the time run on his move, then you're not really actively playing that game anyway. How much of your concentration does it drain to not look at a game that your opponent has abandoned ? Zero ?

Vulpes - this thread is about changing the situation, I know it must be a difficult concept for you to grasp at this point, maybe you need another bzillion year hiatus to give your head a shake?

ok, slim- what do you propose to do about the situation?

chess.com already penalizes disconnects.  if your in a tense big battle the extra time is fair and needed.

how could you fairly enforce a No-stalling in simpler decisions?  would someone actually be making game by game evalutions of all these countless, nearly meaninglesss blitz games?? that doesn't sound right.

agreed, and I don't have any sensible solution, but maybe, just maybe by talking about it somebody might come up with something. Clock sucking is not something we should have to put up with when playing chess.

Well, I agree with you there. Erik needs to impliment better abandoning rules, this waiting for your opponent to resign is stupid really. And a reply to whether any of the three options make any sense, well ofcourse they do, simple. You can choose to cry about it, you shorten your games by playing Bullet game rather than 3  minutes or longer, or just close your account if your frustrated. You wanna know what im frustrated with, all the friggin cheating going on in this server. Chess.com have the worst cheat detection by far. You realize how long it took to ban Spawn, that guy was a massive cheater and it took for ever to get him banned. Wake up Chess.com!!!!  Its a joke really.

The problem with this is that we dont know the reason someone quit making moves.  Sure we all know people purposely abandon games, just sit there, disconnect, etc.  (None of this i understand.  Is there some thinking that losing on time is better than resigning?)

Sometimes you just lose connection, an emergency happens, power goes out, could be a lot of different things and there is no way to differentiate.

Waailap

What's the problem? I need my clock sucked once in a while. Otherwise my bells go blue.

your only hope, as I see it, is a polite chat request.  cc will do nothing about this IMHO.

you could also play shorter games or accept that some games will just take awhile.  (the "waiting in line" idea- it sucks but its unavoidable)

The cool thing about the internet is that you don't have to repeat your questions over and over again, whilst dealing with humans suffering from overly developed frontal bones. you can simply copy/paste and save yourself a multitude of minutes just like that. Thus I put it to you again:

you seem inclined to taking the valiant stand and notifying Eric of these injustices, that you've suffered through. While this is all dandy, I feel I must remind you that this thread by no means is an original. There has been hundreds if not thousands, and it's quite difficult to tell one from the other.

Why do you think this is?

Doesn't the staff of chess.cow care? Do they not know that time wasted can never be redeemed? Or are they in fact just relying on you being adult enough to know how to allocate your precious hours?

- Christ sake; how many minutes did bickoring over this rubbish gobble up? You wont get compensation for these minutes either.

Isn't that amazing! I can copy and paste too. No time wasted here ; )

vulpes... have a heart.  he's been wronged.

I've had but one negative experience with this. and keep in mind this is with a G30 so the time involved was more.  my opponent played badly and had a running exposed king.

there's rarely much that "Agony-analysis" can do in this kind of situation- and I expected my opponent to quickly make the only the decisions that kept the game going.

and of course, I waited and Waited.  I did say something over chat.  which was ignored... and was getting like SC kind of upset.

then I decided to just post analysis.  I was like " x to y; y to z #  Another idea blown to peices!"...

I took a comic, but thoughtful look at all the opponents play- and 20 minutes Did in fact elapse with nothing but a move or so....

my opponent could have been made or angry, but I kept chillaxed and got some practice in visualizing.   this is the only time in many, Many games that I have struggled with clock sucking.

there's another annoying subject : chat ignored! what's even worse is when you start a blitz game, go to say good luck and you see that your oponent has disabled chat! Why not just plaster some duct tape across my mouth and punch me in the stomach!! Talk about a display of poor sportsmanship.

If you're so bothered by having to wait a whole couple of minutes then chess may not be a sutable game for you. I suggest something more fit for those with short attention spans. Hungry Hungry Hippos, perhaps.

But anyway, I suspect the real reason for this whiney shitpost of a thread was nothing more than an excuse for OP to demonstrate that he has the incredible wit of a junior high schooler with a moronic, half-baked pun.

well aren't you a joy to behold, lol!! Oh and by the way Mr Sunny Shine Shine, what's wrong with hungry hungry hippos? I like that game. Who are you going to slam next...Bambi?... Dr.Suess?

thegreat_patzer

I agree SC although I might not have said it that way.

its amazing to me that you've described things that are impolite & poor ettiquette- and everyone is so mad at you?

I mean, really, guys if you COULD pick wouldn't you pick an opponent who was polite, opened with a nice "good Luck"- and didn't just sit on his hands when he clearly has a position where there's really no choice about what to play?

I don't understand the flame.

I guess my only advice to SC is not to allow these kinds of players to bother him.  they happen. if they bother you that Much your not going to enjoy chess much around here.

I accept that people will be snarky and uncooperative, espacially when they are losing.  it doesn't make me cranky- and the one time it did, I did what I could to be less upset about it.

If there was something wrong with Hungry Hungry Hippos do you think I would have recommended it to you? No. I suggested as a game that you might find better suited for you.

Good point, why would Darth_Algar get so mad at me for pointing out poor ettiquette and poor sportsmanship? Maybe I touched a nerve with him? Hit a little too close to home?

I suspect he may very well be a clock sucker himself!

Russian roulette's a gambling game. If I'm going to agree to play it with you I need to first know what ante you're putting up.
