Clockroach?

Sort:
Ubzugajir

I was just kicking back for a few minutes before bedtime with some 1|0, checkmating sometimes, getting checkmated, winning or losing on time when no one's ahead, when someone's a little ahead, and occasionally being down 3 pieces or facing a mating sequence, but scurrying my king around just enough for their clock to run out.

The next morning I found a cheery message on my wall calling me a 'clockroach.' I'm curious as to the prevailing feeling… is that even a valid thing to say? Isn't the very nature of 1|0 such that time/clock management is what makes you "good" at 1|0? Even if your whole strategy from the outset (and I'm not saying mine is/was) was to 'not get checkmated at a faster pace than the opponent' (rather than going for a mate yourself), one player still has to be better at it than the other. Is there anything ignoble about purposely using the clock as your weapon, if you're going to bother playing 1|0 in the first place?

I dont see anything wrong with trying not to get mated haha and as fast as possible. That guy will be messaging a lot of people calling them clockroach lol

it is totally justified to use the clock in a 1|0 game, after all thats what its there for

Time is an aspect of the game... if your opponent plays 1|0 and has a problem with losing on time, then they should:

1). get better at chess (regardless of what their level of skill is) Laughing

2).move more quickly! Laughing

3). and remember that "it's just a game" Laughing

or alternatively

4). play a time control they can cope with! Wink

Clockroach, that is a new one I had not heard before. Quite refreshing to see something new, lol.

Play on and take the win despite winning on time in a lost game... The clock masters, so maybe a clockroach is a good thing? wink.png

I offer a draw sometimes if im up on time but down with position and they have no chance in mating me.

fraser22

I tend to not play or rematch players that just blatantly waste time for no reason.. or if they are up on time and position but they choose to waste time rather than go for a win/mate. I guess that is a true clockroach.. a player up on time and position and decides to use clock to win. but please dont hold me to that lol

why offer a draw if your opponent is down on time its as bad as being down on position

Exactly, at OTB tournys there will be 48 seconds to 5 minutes on peoples clock and then still draw it.

Yes, clever and funny word, clockroach. Anyone playing bullet and complaining about losing on time is a monumental moron and I'm 100% they do not resign lost positions with -1 second in their games. Great post clockroach! Haha

7 Bullet Chess Tips By Hikaru Nakamura

1. Never Resign.

Another way of putting it: have no shame. Unlike in normal chess, anything can happen, even if there’s a mate in two or one, of if you’re down a queen. Never resign.

2. Never Assume When Premoving.

Don't premove in a situation where if what you expect to happen doesn’t necessarily have to happen — and your move is still legal.

3. Don’t Focus On Time.

Keep the clock in your peripheral vision, but don’t focus on it unless the game is definitely headed for a time scramble.

4. Choose Your Thinking Time Wisely.

If you want to think for more than one second, do a quick check of time. If you have less than 30 seconds, NEVER think more than five seconds, unless it’s trying to find a clear mate.

5. Almost Any Opening Works.

As long as you can blitz out 10-15 moves, you can play any opening — which is specifically why theory is bad. In an open Sicilian (for example) you could get tricked on move 10 and also can't premove — you'd have to use precious extra seconds.

6. Simplify When Up Material Or Down On Time.

When you are up a lot of material — or down big on time — it’s important to eliminate your opponent's pieces to simplify the position. If you have two rooks vs bishop and knight, sacrifice one rook for the knight. Simplifying allows fewer chances for checks, counterplay, or complications.

7. Know When To Quit.

If you’re winning a lot of games on the board AND the clock, you know you’re on form. But if your wins are primarily on time in a lost position, then it might be time to quit and preserve your rating before the tide turns against you.

The subsequent thread is full of Naka praise ("cool", ..."nice", ..."fantastic", ..."thank you", ..."great", as if permission were granted :)! If it works for (perhaps) the greatest 1-0 internet Bullet player of all time (Never Resign), as well as generally accepted & adopted in 1-0 play by almost all GMs (watch these games) online, why quibble? The game of 1-0 Bullet Chess is a standout exception to the otherwise valid, yet contrarily centered concerns in the thread.

"Clockroach"? Now that's far more rude than an incredibly gifted, fast King, though it may be time to quit (rule 7)! So keep "kicking back", stay "cheery", 'cause in 1-0 Bullet "the clock" is indeed "your weapon" Ubzugajir!

I know, made me laugh too. I'm betting someone will use it as a sign on before the day is out!

LOL LouStule! Bet you're right!
