Increments are normally multiplied by either 40 or 60 for the number of moves in an average game. This gives the total time as around 36-40 minutes for each side. 30|15 is normally the preferred time control for those games (40-45 minutes a side).

What time would toy use foe playing with a friend who never used times before but is interested in trying? It seems like we often play for an hour or two. I'm thinking about 30 minutes with a 10 second increment, but I have no clue how an increment actually adds up in a real OTB game.
