I'm 14 years old and I live in Kentucky in a small town.  I love to play chess and reguarly go to tournnaments.  My rating is 1140 but will probably stop rising at 1400.  I am kind of in a slum and really want to up my game.  How can I find a good chess coach that isn't too expensive that I can meet face to face?

"My rating is 1140 but will probably stop rising at 1400."

Perhaps you should try your hand at the lottery.

What?  I'm talking about my USCF rating and I play like a 1400 player in tournaments and my rating will probably level off because its rising now.

Please do not insult my intelligence and also when I said slum I meant that I was in a chess "slum" meaning even though i'm studying and reading books I don't see any improvment in my play.

Not really very nice, Loomis, but probably fitting, coming from a chessplayer.  still, not very nice.

Maybe I should clarify the point of my remark. The guy seems to be psychic to know his rating will top off 200 some points from now. Perhaps a lucrative way to put that psychic ability to use is to lay the lottery. Now, what's not nice about that?

Hi

Have you tried chessmentor right here at chess.com?  They have a few free lessons where it asks you to make a move and it will tell you if that was the best move or not.  They have high rated games there.  I think that is the best way to improve your game which is to keep playing high rated games and learn from your mistakes in each game.  I've got most of my experience by playing yahoo chess.  My elo rating on yahoo is about 1750.  I've never came face to face with a grandmaster before but I have improved my play since game 1.

Hello Chessgod, I think you meant slump instead of slum, slump meaning to droop like when a baseball layer's batting avg. decreases because of performing below his normal standard, and slum referring to poorly kept sections of urban neighborhoods.  Good luck with improving your game.

Chess.com has a resource used to find coaches.  Use that and see if anything turns up.  You can also use VOIP programs such as ventrilo to meet a coach over the internet.
