Some guy I just beat said, "Bro, you're a coffee house".

What does that mean? Never heard the term like that before

I've heard of a coffee house player.

I would have asked that person but they abandoned the game right after dropping the comment. I'm guessing it's not a positive term

Well, depends if you like coffee

I would take it as a compliment grin.png

Coffee house players are casual players who auger simple one-dimensional attacks.

Ahh, so it was some kind of derogatory statement. Thanks for the insight!

can we prove the 2nd and 1st dimension real?

can we prove the 4th dimension real?

Idk

I think we can at least prove the 1st dimension real because in that dimension, according to this player's "Coffee Houe" comment, I beat him twice in that dimension happy.png

The 5th Dimension were not coffee house players.

Sorta like street hustlers who thrive on cheap tricks. Of course, those cheap tricks have taken many GM scalps.

Isn't not falling for tricks kinda the whole point of chess? We have to learn openings and tactics so that we don't fall victim to them. Who among us didn't fall for the fools mate at first?

Avatar of Ziryab

You don’t fall for a trick in Fool’s Mate, you court it. You might be thinking of Scholar’s Mate.

Yes, you're right. I did say the wrong one

Here’s a screenshot from a 1656 book showing both. Francis Beale, The Royall Game of Chesse-Play

That's pretty cool to have that from such an old source. Did you find that pic online or is this from your own collection?

Denis Diderot was a coffee house chess player during the French Enlightenment, but now chess is more a thoughtful virtual amusement without the radical element. Though, there are still cruel players who ruin the game's reflective character for a quick win.

Google Books
https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Royall_Game_of_Chesse_play/cPxYAAAAYAAJ?hl=enI have read it and entered every game into a database. The games of Greco therein differ quite a bit from those you can find in databases and at chessgames.com.

With that in mind I think this player that made the comment is giving me way too much credit!
