Complete Beginner Mistakes

Hi Guys I am new here my name Is Iain and I'm 32 years old and from the UK.
I Know how to play Chess, how the pieces move, I have watched Videos and understand how to bring out your minor pieces first get castled and not to bring your queen out early without good reason, try not to move the same piece more than once in the early game Etc.
I'm not really clued up on the openings and heir names though.

My 30 minute rating over a short amount of games is about 1150 and I would say I lose more than i win probably at a ratio of 60/40

I have a problem and it is probably the worst thing you can do in a chess game sometimes I move a piece and its like my brain has turned off for a second I end up leaving my Queen wide open to get scooped up by a Minor piece or move a piece and leave a minor piece open with no exchange possible. basically I make really obvious mistakes and get punished for it by played that are at a similar level than me its not like i get ran over I make the mistake and beat myself.

Have any of you guys got tips on how to fix this and stay focussed I really feel my Early/Middle game is my weakest part sometimes I give up a piece by  my 15th move or even sooner.

If you where me starting to play chess with some basic knowledge and of average intelegence how would you start your learning career? what parts would you focus on first?

Any Help would be greatly appreciated

Iain :)

There's no quick fix for that. You just have to keep trying, study puzzles, and take your time planning your move. Eventually you'll get to where you'll lose to stronger play rather than blundering on the spot. That's how it goes in the chess world ;-)

Thanks for the tips man much appreciated!

Also, before making a move, spend a minute to make sure you aren't hanging the piece. Doing that really helped my game.

Before I joined this site I played with my electronic chess board and some computer apps, which led to poor habits because I could just take back bad moves.

Just keep playing games. I would focus on 1 or 3 day games, to give yourself time to analyse the positions. Always ask yourself "am I being attacked". Can I attack without losing a piece?

It just takes time and losing a lot of games. Also studing helps. Notice how many books chess players read? It's because there is more to the game than just playing it. I have started replaying famous games. I have a couple of books that analyse each move.

They also talk about past chess masters and their playing styles. Part of the appeal of chess is learning about remarkable games and why they are remarkable.

Tactics trainer is a great way to pass the time between games. There are some other sites too, like chess tactics, where you can practice this.
