This chess graphics site could give you some inspiration: Virtual Pieces. Okay, it's mine. 
I'm going to get a chess tattoo. I don't have a specific design yet, but I'd like to incorporate 2D pieces using the piece style below (standard book symbols). If any of you are artists, I could use some design ideas.
