Controlling Pain with Chess

Does anyone use chess to control pain.  I have terrible pain in both feet and legs and find that focusing intently on a chess game makes the pain go away.

Does anyone else use chess for that purpose?

Glad to hear that works for you

Playing chess games at chess.com eliminates pain and cannot kill like opiates.  At 86 I'll be playing games here more and more as I head to the end of my existence.  Advertise to nursing homes and hospices and you will gain millions of more new members.

Back to the OP… interesting topic you posted, i haven’t run across this here in my short membership. I heartily agree with you on the opioid journey. I’m “older” though not anywhere near your seniorship status. However, due to chronic daily pain and flare ups that are nearly debilitating, i too look for healthier ways to manage pain. Now that you’ve brought it to my attention I suppose playing chess does help. It certainly averts my conscious focus for a time. Perhaps even a touch too much as i will sit almost motionless while concentrating. I need to move with and through the pain often enough to remain loose. I hope others have similar thoughts or suggestions. And my hat’s off to you @Mitch408! Keep playing and remaking positive, it beats the alternative.

Had a friend at the chess club that died at about 80, was diabetic and had to have both legs amputated toward the end, before he went he told me that he was in constant pain except when he played chess....so yep, chess can take pain away.

Have opposite problem. My chess is very bad when i am in pain but very good when i am not.

Had a chess club friend that was diabetic and had both legs amputated when he was around 80. he said the only thing that made him forget his constant pain was chess. True story.
