hi ppl, i just paid a membership today. i am big new to chess.com. i think i like this site. anyway i wonder if there are ppl actually using cheats to play on this site, how do i spot and report them? or do i have to deal with them? are cheats often appeared in standard games than blitz games?

Standard has a higher risk of cheating because it takes more time to play with a computer, waiting for it's move. I haven't encountered one in the time I've been here. Also, use your membership. Make groups, use tactics trainer, etc.

I reckon you could cheat easily enough in any game over 5 mins. My Chessmaster 9000 has virtual players that move instantly. Say it takes 3 secs to copy their moves onto the board here. That would mean 3 mins for a 60 move game.

But why would you bother? It's a feeble way of winning

People can cheat in 1 minute bullet games, it's not by copying moves from an engine, it's allowing it to play for you.

What about brave cheaters? Smile

The site has a policy but are not supposed to discuss in the open-forums:

do you guys accept cheaters' friend request? i would NOT! if i see anyone cheats i would tell them STOP and tell them to use their brain, not lifeless engine.

Lol this guy is funny.

just curious, how old are they cheaters? i will not be surprised if they are young adult. i cant imagine someone in 60's does that lol

Gracious_Lunatic

I've played numerous games with 3 day limits and never encountered a cheater.

tliu1222

Which engine eh?

haohao100

i do not worry about cheaters because their rating would be very high if they have a strong computer, and if it is a weak computer, i have the posibility too win because it almost is the same as playing a normal game

interesting to know. i might meet them once in every 20-30 games, which is not bad. if more than 30 games that is great.

Yeah... hacking the system and giving yourself the ability to make illegal moves would be sort of obvious...

STOP! please respect the rule that is no cheats. Yell

I can see I am not the only to call my patzer brain a chess engine Tongue Out

Multiple people have said they have never encountered a cheater.  How would they know?  I don't think cheating is very common here, but I am sure it exists.  That being said the cheater is only cheating him/her self.  They are inflating a rating without learning what they need to back up that rating.  And unless I have missed something there are no monetary rewards for a chess.com rating

The only cheating I'm aware that I've encountered has be some peeps that 'arrange' a low score to play in tornys against weaker players to win.

I still am at a loss to understand why cheating in this manner, or the engine manner, is undertaken.

Anyhow, I don't think it's rife on this website however, as Chander71 says, how does the average 'joe' know...

There will always be those who cheat on sites like this.  Using a computer to get their moves and then playing them as their own.  Sometimes they are easy to spot when a really good move comes from a mediocre player.  Cheating goes on in other tournament areas.  I have seen this when higher rated players deliberately lose games prior to a tournament to get a lower rating so they can play in a lower level to have an advantage.  When I was playing at the World open tournament they caught a Master level player helping a lower rated player by walking by his board and then they would meet in the bathroom to communicate moves.  Sad!
