crappy servers

so i was wondering when will chess.com finally put in place better servers and provide more stable and faster connections? i mean its not the 90s anymore its 2020. how many of you lost matches when in a complete forced mate position and you pre moved all the moves and have 2 sec on the clock and yet you lose cause running out of time? , how many times you wanted to abort the game at start cause your opponent seemed offline and suddenly he moves and your abort command translate as resign? and so many other issues all related with connection issues and crappy servers.

Servers are pretty stable for me. But moves take time to transit from your client to the live servers. That transit time goes through a lot of equipment not controlled by the site, each one can introduce lag along the way. Additionally, your local device can also introduce some lag. Since the site only allows a certain amount of lag, and premoves take a minimum of 0.1 seconds, it's possible to lose on time even with mate premoves.

As to aborts, games automatically abort if your opponent doesn't move at the beginning of a game, so just wait a little longer.

The excuse of “other issues” is as old as chesscom. And as false it can be. I have THREE different ways of connecting to servers, so 100% sure the problem is on your side, chesscom.

im not an expert in network and internet or computer science but i only have those mentioned issues on this particular site i play on other sites with same settings i use here and never had these issues there so common sense tells me problem gotta be on chess.com side not mine.

Three different ways that probably share similar connection paths. This would be especially true for members not in the US.

Other sites are located in different parts of the world than the chess.com Live servers. Comparing another website hosted in other countries, or one that might have distributed servers for their live chess process (I haven't researched if any do), or one without any ads doesn't discount that there can be a connection issue between you and the chess.com Live server process or that the local client environment may interact poorly with the site's code.

none of your "might haves's" or "could bes" or "would bes" is a proof that problem is not on chess.com as it can still be very well related to chess.com servers maybe they using cheap garbage hardware or whatever so unless you can definitively prove the issue is not with chess.com then your comments are not really helpful or clearing anything other then throwing a bunch of speculations out there that could be or not be true.

I almost never have issues in Live unless there is an overall problem impacting pretty much everyone, which does occasionally happen.

My comments are based on having some background knowledge in server technology, networking, and programming along with the experience of playing here and reading/following a lot of topics here, many with staff input. The simple fact is, there are a number of factors that can influence connectivity problems, many outside the site's control.

I also don't really play bullet which is especially prone to latency, so any slowness caused on the connection path is going to be much more noticeable.

bbobbyfischerx43

then that could explain our different experiences with connectivity issues as i play mostly bullet

@Martin, there is quite a noticable difference in lag between chess.com and the site whose name can not be mentioned. This has been known for a long time. What is the exact reason, I have no idea, but it would be nice if chess.com was as smooth as that site.

Location, location, location. That is a large part of it for most people, especially members outside the US. You are likely closer to the host, from a network perspective, and have fewer chances to get introduced lag. Ads, or their absence, can also play a role.

Overall codebase can play a role as well, but the other two are likely the largest contributing factors.

I have played some bullet here and I suck at it. I seem to play it better OTB. I made that comment because I noticed you mostly played bullet.

I don't particularly notice any lag in the few games I played, but with that little time, I don't think I would

bbobbyfischerx43

and to add salt to the injury i just played a bullet game where it said i lost on time but both me and my opponent had zero time left on the clock at least on my screen we both had 0 time left not even 0.1 for any of us just clean 0 .

bbobbyfischerx43

i think they dont want to admit it maybe cause to fix this problem its gonna cost them a lot of money or something so this brings this famous quote to my mind that " it is very difficult to get a man to understand something when his job depends on not understanding it" ......

I hope you will not encounter this issue again, sharp 0 minute that's too bad! Wish there's staffs looking this post.

There are staff. Martin is true enough, location is the only other factor. The servers are fine, 0.0 happens, but you lose 5 points of rating, how does that affect you?

hmmm it affects me 5 points of rating thats how its affecting me and if you mean 5 points is not big enough then tell chess.com to just randomly gift me 5 points of rating every now and then .....

Well, I'm not staff, so....

As to 0 showing on both clocks, I'm certain if you look at the game in your archive your opponent at least had some time left.

bbobbyfischerx43

when im playing  a game live i only see the time on the game screen so if its faulty and shows wrong time then looking at archives later doesnt help with anything since i already lost the game on time lol
